Check your PT driving licence expiry date, when you exchange your UK licence the PT replacement could have an expiry date beyond that of one of the age renewal points but will legally expire at the age date and so will need to be renewed before its printed expiry date.

My Spanish driving licence expires in June, is it best to apply for renewal beforehand, and if so, how long ?

You can't renew a Spanish licence in Portugal, and you can't exchange an expired licence either.
If you mean exchange it for a Portuguese licence before it expires then I would suggest immediately as IMTT are experiencing long delays in issuing licences due to the rush of people exchanging their UK licences before Brexit.

I still have my old licence and am also proud of it. I never renewed to photo because they only last so many years then you have to renew at a cost. My old one is valid until I am 75 I think. Twice I have been stopped by the Gaudia in the last 3 years and it was ok both times. I think 3000 Euros sounds a bit of a porky. Drink driving is only 600 euro fine.
