If you use the toll roads or have a right hand drive car it's worth enrolling for Via Verde. This is the portuguese highway toll payment system and you register for it online here: https://www.viaverde.pt/via-verde (the site is in english)
For 26.50Euros you get a transponder that sits in your car and automatically debits your bank account when you pass through a toll or use a Via Verde compatible car park. This means you don't have to reach over the passenger side to press the ticket button if you are using a right hand drive car.

I use a different option where you hire the transponder...... but only pay in months where you use the motorway..... the rest is the same.
I do this for 2 reasons, firstly, I'm not in the Algarve so don't always use the motorways.... so in months I don't, I don't pay. Secondly.... if you buy it, maintenance is down to you - if you rent it, you get them to send another if there's any problem.
